Accessibility Specialist

Accessibility Specialist
Ottawa, ON

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Transcription & Quality Assurance, and working closely with a team of Transcription Specialists and the Quality Assurance team, this position is responsible for converting source documents into various alternate formats to create accessible documents that are usable by the blind and low vision consumer in the production of educational materials, forms, and instruction documents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Transcription of source (print) material into various alternate formats such as Accessible PDF, Accessible Word, E-text and Large Print. This process includes scanning, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), formatting and proofreading.

2. Staying abreast of the PDF/UA (universal accessibility) standards to ensure the rendition of Accessible PDF documents are always current.

3. Updating the alternate format User Guides with any new standards.

4. Producing tactile graphics using graphic software to transform print illustrations, maps, images, diagrams, etc. into readable tactual format for the blind.

5. Learn the Braille formatting rules to assist other team members in generating formatted documents ready for input into Braille software.

Qualifications:

Education & Requirements:

  • A minimum of a 2 year college diploma in graphic design, business administration or other relevant education or equivalent experience, is required
  • This is an entry level role; some previous experience working in an office or production setting would be an asset
  • Must be able to travel across North America
  • Must successfully pass criminal background check, credit check
  • Experience in writing reports and document structuring is an asset

Knowledge:

  • Proficient in using Microsoft office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat, PDF
  • Knowledge of scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software is an asset
  • Knowledge of Braille would be considered an asset

Skills:

  • Strong proof reading skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and troubleshoot problems and issues
  • Well organized and have logical problem solving skills
  • Good relationship and team building skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Desktop publishing skills would be considered an asset

  • Ability to manipulate word, learn a user interface
  • Ability to work with graphic software, such as InDesign or Corel Draw to create tactile graphics or document layout formatting
  • Ability to learn technical details and provide feedback on user experience for the tools used
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy and ability to learn things quickly
  • Ability to remain calm under the pressure of tight deadlines

Language:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Fluency in French and/or Spanish would be an asset

Document Testing & Transcription Operator

Document Testing and Transcription Operator
Ottawa, ON

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Transcription & Quality Assurance, and working closely with a team of Transcription Specialists and the Quality Assurance team, this position is responsible for using and testing proprietary software to create documents that are usable by the blind and low vision consumer in the production of educational materials such as text books and testing materials with a large emphasis on Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) subject matter.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Learning a T-Base custom built software which is used to create accessible documents for the blind and low vision consumer in the educational marketplace.

2. Working within MS Word to format and proofread documents that have been initially processed and transcribed using the custom built software. This includes: receiving documents in a PDF format, running documents through the proprietary software, following the rules, guidelines and prompts to make decisions regarding the formatting of the documents.

3. Providing feedback, both verbal and written to the software development team and subject matter experts on the effectiveness of the platform.

4. Producing tactile graphics using graphic software to transform print illustrations, maps, images, diagrams, etc. into readable tactual format for the blind.

5. Initially, working with the team to test the software and provide feedback on its accuracy and ease of use. Ultimately will move to become the first generation of user to apply and transcribe documents using the software application.

Junior/Intermediate Software Developer

Six-Month Contract
Junior/Intermediate Software Developer
Ottawa, ON

Join the growing Software Development Team at T-Base Communications. Reporting to the Manager of Development, you will be working in a fast paced and challenging environment. You will be responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of Windows based components to produce various output formats optimized for accessibility, utilized by our customers' blind, low vision and print disabled end-users.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree in Computer Engineering Technology or Computer Science, Game Development or in a related area with appropriate experience.
  • Some experience developing with C# and C++
  • Knowledge of XML, XSLT
  • Familiarity with Agile, System Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Must successfully pass criminal background check
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to remain calm under the pressure of tight deadlines

Assets:
