Something different to everyone
There has been a flurry of widespread discussions since blind New York Governor David Paterson assumed his newfound position just one month ago. While the primary focus has centered around the governor’s inspirational story of success in the face of adversity, reports have also spotlighted Paterson’s attained success despite his personal choice not to learn braille, use a cane or guide dog, etc. To some observers, this active decision may demonstrate great independence, while to some members within the blind community, it represents the opposite.
For many blind, deafblind and partially sighted individuals, having access to both publicly and privately distributed information in a format they can read means independent access, handling, and decision-making. With respect to financial statements, for example, receiving this personal information in standard print vs. an alternate format could mean the difference between handing over private and confidential details, entrusting a third party individual to relay desired information, and personally accessing the information, which provides consumers with additional knowledge, flexibility and security. In terms of employment success, accessible format materials ensure that employees participate and contribute in the same way as their colleagues, and that they are again not forced to rely on the assistance and available time of other individuals to read information.
The Governor has clearly developed his own solutions to these challenges, but it is important to remember that not all blind, deafblind and partially sighted customers /employees have the same preferences with respect to information access, and alternatives should be available in order to accommodate diverse needs.
While it is admittedly my personal choice to access alternative format materials and I can attest firsthand to the large number of requests being made for similar accessible documents, I can also appreciate that independence is defined on an individual basis, and means something different to everyone.
We recognize and applaud Governor Paterson’s great achievements, as he demonstrates the potential and capability of blind individuals to the public, and wish him continued success for the future!
