I recently read an article in the National Post asking, “Are braille’s days as the great equalizer over?”. After exploring arguments for and against teaching braille, the National Post concludes that the status of braille's longevity is limited. However, I strongly feel that braille is as useful, relevant and important as when it was first invented.

We just had an Earthquake here in Ottawa – somewhere between 5.5 and 5.7 on the Richter scale. From what we can tell, the earthquake was felt across most of Ontario and the northern United States.

Last week, I had the pleasure of being a guest speaker at the North Dakota School for the Blind located in Grand Forks, North Dakota. What an experience!

After a seven hour flight, my dog, Bizet, and I touched down in Grand Forks.  Grand Forks is a charming town of about 50,000 very friendly people. Being a country girl at heart, I felt immediately welcome.

We are now one week into the implementation of the Credit Card Act, which addresses new credit card disclosure practices. In essence, these introduced regulations ensure the clear communication of interest rates, annual fees, and penalty charges to customers. Finance Minister Flaherty is to be commended for his decision to mandate that organizations more effectively communicate such important financial terms.

After recently returning home from a simply unforgettable, one month trip to Tanzania, I am reminded, once again, that in no way do challenges have to limit our opportunities in life.

Despite the unfamiliar surroundings, unsettled terrain and unconventional transportation that I knew I was to encounter on this rare excursion, I did not let it stop me from participating, alongside my sighted travel partners, in all activities.
