Join a growing team at T-Base Communications and lend your technical expertise and communication skills to help deliver alternative format customer communications solutions into government and Fortune 500 companies.  Working in a challenging multi-discipline environment, you will audit and assess websites for compliance to accessibility standards, recommend implementation changes, and work directly with the customer to help them evolve their web presence towards full compliance.   A key element of accessible online communications involves creation of accessible PDF (A-PDF) documents   You are an expert in A-PDF, W3C and Canadian Federal government common look and feel standards.  

Position Description
Reporting to the Manager of Technology, the Web Accessibility Specialist is responsible for leading web site accessibility audits of key customer web sites in accordance with accessibility and usability standards.  You are responsible for conducting all aspects of these audits including utilization of web accessibility testing tools, assistive technologies, coordinating with user testers and communicating your specific implementation recommendations to the customer.  You will also lead a team, on a project basis, in the preparation of accessible PDF documents required by our customers.   In both web audits, and A-PDF work you will be responsible to deliver high quality results, on time and on budget to ensure high customer satisfaction.  You will represent T-Base’ interests within applicable international standard bodies.

Education and Knowledge

  • A three (3) year diploma or degree in Computer Science or  related program.
  • An advanced level of experience with W3C WCAG 2.0 (A, AA, AAA) guidelines, ISO 32000 standards, US Section 508 and Canadian federal government Common Look and Feel standards.
  • Sound knowledge of commonly used web site development languages (such as HTML/XHTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, PHP and ASP) and commonly used CMS (Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, etc.).
  • Experience with HTML 5 and related technologies and APIs an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of web evaluation tools such as HiSoftware, Deque Systems and SSB Bart.
  • Sound knowledge of print file formats such as PDF or AFP.
  • Knowledge and/or hands-on experience with PERL/TK and XML/XSLT is desirable.
  • Experience in a progressively responsible technical role in a financial or related industry or an equivalent combination of relevant education will be considered an asset.

Certified Braille Transcribers

T-Base Communications is committed to high quality, on time delivery of braille education textbooks. Blind and low vision students have a right to receive educational material at the same time as their sighted peers. T-Base is also committed to its certified Braille transcribers. This incentive program is to build loyalty and foster good relationships between T-Base and its network of certified transcribers. 

We encourage all braille transcribers, proofers and formatters who are interested in providing high quality timely delivery of textbooks and other material to register with T-Base. The remainder of this program guide sets out the registration process and the benefits available. 

Eligibility

This program is open to all certified Braille transcribers, formatters and proofers in any format; music, literary, geography, and/or Nemeth. You must be able to provide proof of certification from either The Library of Congress or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or other recognized certification body. You must also be able to demonstrate through three customer references that you can provide timely, high quality Braille transcription.

Registeration Process

All transcribers must register by sending an email with the following information: contact information, certification type, proof of certification, summary of experience and three customer references. The references must be able to comment positively on the quality of your transcription skills and your ability to adhere to agreed-upon delivery dates. Once the reference checks have been completed, you will be contacted by a member of the T-Base team to provide you with your status. Should you become a T-Base registered transcriber you will receive a $100.00 signing bonus upon completion of your first work assignment.  We will be in touch with you to further assess your preferences and answer any questions that you may have about the program or about T-Base in general.

Program Benefits

Being a registered transcriber with T-Base affords you several benefits, with the end goal of providing you with a steady, reliable flow of business from T-Base.

Guaranteed Monthly Earnings

At its discretion, T-Base will maintain a number of Preferred registered certified transcribers. As a Preferred Transcriber, T-Base will guarantee you at least $500.00 of work per month, provided that you commit to bidding on all transcription opportunities from T-Base when they become available and that you consistently offer your services at your best transcription rates. Preferred transcribers will be selected based upon your level of experience, quality of work, available work capacity and your consistent ability to meet agreed upon deadlines.

Incentives for Tools

T-Base Communications’ understands the high costs associated with maintaining software, and the need to continue using the best available transcription tools. To help you offset some of these costs, you will be eligible for a tools upgrade allowance in the amount of $500.00 per year provided that you have delivered at least $12,500 in transcription services to T-Base for the year. A “year” refers to the period from November 1 through October 31, the following year.   

Tools that qualify include transcription software, graphics software, FTP software, computing hardware, embossers, refreshable braille displays or other tools as deemed an important part of your tool kit. All submissions must be submitted by November 30 each year and must include a receipt.

Referral Fees

T-Base maintains a formal network of certified transcribers including professional persons such as yourself. From time to time T-Base endeavors to grow its network as the T-Base business volume grows. To that end, T-Base maintains a referral fee incentive.  

If you have acquaintances or friends you think would be a great addition to our network, please feel free to have them contact us and let us know that you referred them. Upon registration as a T-Base transcriber, you will be awarded a $100.00 referral fee. 

Work Distribution

T-Base Communications will maintain the following work distribution process for its certified Braille transcribers. When there is a transcription requirement, T-Base will send an email informing you of a transcription opportunity to be quoted on. The email will provide you a timeline for a quote response and a secure link to the T-Base web site where you will find the details of the opportunity including: samples of the work to be transcribed, Braille format (contracted, uncontracted, Nemeth etc.) book title, number of print pages, language and required deadlines. Upon review of the quoted responses, T-Base will be in contact with you regarding your status.
