Web Accessibility (half-day session)

Audience: Management responsible for overseeing IT teams

Module 1  Why Accessibility Matters:

You'll understand the latest legal, moral, and ethical obligations (including W3C WCAG 2.0 AA, Ontario’s AODA legislation, Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, the U.S. government’s Section 508, and the Government of Canada's Standard On Web Accessibility) and review case studies that support the proactive adoption of web accessibility.

Module 2  Overview of Web Accessibility

In module 2, you'll learn the fundamentals of WCAG 2.0 AA, including Principles, Guidelines, and Success Criteria, as well as Level A, AA, and AAA Compliance. By participating in Before and After Demonstrations, you'll be able to gain a real understanding of how the WCAG 2.0 AA Success Criteria applies. We will also review an introduction of Quick Checks and how to apply them as a stepping stone into web accessibility testing.

Duration: 7.5 hours
Audience: Content developers and IT managers

Module 2  Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA:

In module 2 you will learn the history of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA and understand the structure of WCAG: Principles, Guidelines, and Success Criteria, as well as Level A, AA, and AAA Compliance. By participating in Before and After Demonstrations you'll be able to gain a real understanding of how the WCAG 2.0 AA Success Criteria applies and how to interpret the language of the WCAG 2.0 AA Success Criteria in concrete terms.

Module 3 – WCAG 2.0 AA Tools, Testing, and Techniques:

In module 3, you will participate in accessibility testing through tools we use such as Web Developer Toolbar and Paciello Colour Checker and learn how we test pages for accessibility through demonstrations by our accessibility trainer. You'll also gain an understanding in how to complete an accessibility assessment. You will also be equipped with the tools to generate accessible web content including:
  • Accessible web forms
  • Accessible video and audio for the web (i.e. how to provide transcripts and closed captions)
  • Accessible user experience (UX) features in site design

By the end of our half and full day courses you will know many techniques that can be applied to your organization in order to make your website more accessible. Your staff will also have a better understanding of major disabilities and challenges: what they are, what technologies we typically used to mitigate them, and the technicalities involved in making your content more accessible.
